As photographers Winfield and I have seen over 650 weddings over the years past. But it comes down to having a connection between your client and yourself. They become friends and as friends you want the best for them. It is about serving others.

Summer's almost Gone

Now that summer is winding down it is time to gather all those great photos and video you took on your vacation. Yes, you should be taking video even if it with your little Canon PowerShot! Today's software makes it very easy to edit your photos and video into a great movie you will watch over and over. Here a few tips when creating your movie. 1. Still frames should not be on the screen for more than 3 seconds. 2. Video segments should be limited to 3-4 seconds unless they have a lot of impact. The best way to cut your video is to take all your footage and slice it into the what intrigues you the most. 3. Vary stills and video within the movie. 4. You can also do some voice overs to "explain" some of the video footage. Don't try to use the in camera mic. The sound is always terrible. Just adjust the background music when your voice over comes through.

We were at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church not too long ago and the church consultant pulled me aside and said "you need to come and see this." My first thought was, we have not even started yet, how could we possibly be in trouble? She led me to the main sanctuary where the florist had left bouquets, and pew markers along with all the other accessories and said, "She (the florist) did all of this AND the flowers for the reception for $XXXX. It was was an unbelievably REASONABLE price. The flowers were gorgeous! I asked who the florist was and she said the name of the company was Seeds of Love. Here's the information:

Ah, the memories of Spring Break past! We meet Aline and Josh at their parents beach cottage in Port Aransas for their engagement session. The cottage has a very well known chapel at the top of the property, it seats about 12. After a few photos there we moved onto the beach and the weather couldn't have been better.

If you are ever in Port A, you have to stop at The Port Aransas Brewing Company! They have the best Pizza and the wings are tied for number one with Downstairs at Eric's in Breckenridge, Colorado.

We were also told of the Crazy Cajun but they were closed for the night.

We were honored when Jessica asked us to photograph her marriage to Corey this past November. Jessica is a wonderful person and she and Corey were meant for each other. She is also the daughter of Caryn Hasslocher of Fresh Horizons Catering. I was a little intimidated at first but Jessica, Corey and Caryn along with the rest of the Hasslocher's made Winfield and I feel like part of the family. The wedding day was hardly work, it was filled with so much laughter and good times, before you knew it we were setting up for the send off.

How To Stay on Time on your Wedding Day

One of the most asked question I come across is "what time should I be ready for photos?"

The best way to calculate this is to develop a timeline using the Backwards rule. Start with the Ceremony time and subtract 20 minutes or so, right off the top. No one should be doing formal photographs while guest are arriving. Use this time for your self to gather your thoughts and prepare for the Ceremony. From the that time, subtract the time it takes for the formal family shots or the candid getting ready shots. Subtract additional time for traveling from home or makeup and hair and don't forget to set time aside to eat a little something. Ultimately you will arrive at the time you need to "start getting ready".

We recently received a letter from the McNay announcing beginning March 1st, 2009 they will be accepting limited opportunities for professional photographers to take formal photographs in the most beautiful and prestigious locations INSIDE the museum. This includes use of the main lobby, Grand Staircase and the Courtyard. Lobby restrooms will be available for clients and to change clothes.

Advanced reservations are required and a fee of $100 is applicable for one hour.

This is a welcome change to all the hussel and bussel outside.

We recently photographed an event for GlaxoSmithKline which host a cocktail reception for volunteers who work with patients who are battling breast cancer. The more important aspect is all the volunteers are survivors of breast cancer themselves. Throughout the event we overheard their stories and you realize even the largest of your problems are quite small in comparison.

This is our third year photographing this event and what we have noticed is everyone is truly happy to be there. There are many smiles and embraces to friends and and strangers alike. Everyone is looking forward to another great year.

We Love San Antonio Weddings and Belly Dancers

San Antonio is by far the best city for weddings. Where else can you find such diversified cultures all under one roof (and all so friendly). Sarah, who's father's lineage is Egyptian gave the guest a wonderful surprise with a show stopping belly dance performance. This was a treat for everyone, and especially for those who had traveled from far away. The night was great fun and I'm certain that enrollment in belly dance has doubled since then.

River Rock Event Center

If you are contemplating a Hill Country Wedding Venue, you may want to look into the River Rock Event Center. Plan for 150 guests. Any more than this would be a tight fit. It's a little difficult to get to but once your there it surroundings are very quaint. The price....I'm not sure of but it looks like a good value for the dollar.

Wedding 101 - The Kiss

This is one of our favorite "Tips" It's inevitable that your photographer will ask you to kiss for a "non-posed" pose.
The secret to making this shot look great is to remember NOT to pucker. Puckering is great for ducks not for people.
When being photographed break the lips so that there is a little space between them, come as close to his or her lips as possible without touching, and the rest is history.

Hopefully your photographer also reads this blog. If not, you know what to do!

Breaking Tradition

Kate and Adam had a beautiful wedding. Very elegant yet did not conform to your typical traditions. This combination is more difficult to pull off than you think. Without the proper vendors it can look cheesy, cheap or just plain tacky. Kate and Adam blended all the aspects of million dollar event and brought them together in a way that was unique to their personalities.

They used bold colors in key areas so that it did not dominate but accentuated the environment. Simple items like placing 26 different types of cakes on each guest table ensured that everyone mingled from table to table sampling each flavor of their choice. Here's the tricky part. Using a quality vendor (ei. Bear Moon Bakery) to do the confectionery design led to the guest truly enjoying the distinct flavors and not just the typical "white with rasberry filling cake".

Adding lighting also gave the venue (Cibolo Nature Center) a whole new look. We highly recommend the use of lighting from a photographers point of view. It has a major impact and can be done without an enormous price tag. Courtesy of Pizzini Designs

Congrats to Megan and Ian Chin! It was such a prevlidge to photograph their wedding. Ian is a long time friend of Winfield and I. We met Ian while in College and was also a member of the Economics and Finance Club :)

A little known fact is that Ian attended our wedding and went on our "Honeymoon" with us as well! We had so many friends and family in town that we (and Ian), spent the weekend rafting down the guadalupe and visiting the local theme parks.

A year later we went skiing in Tahoe (alone)!

So impressed with the home we felt compelled to speak with the builder...Mr. Roberto Kenigstein (Lisa's Father) of Image Homes Ltd. Who knew we would be photographing his daughter a year later. Even more interesting is that I did not realize it was he until the rehearsal dinner!

Have you seen the renovation of the Pearl Stable? It was once the grand home to Pearl Brewery's hard-working draft horses in the late 19th Century. It was very well done.....with a little Texas, meets Corporate, meets urban developement feel. Maureen Riebel of Elegant Events by Maureen put together a list of vendors which is sure to get this one published. Botanika created a beautiful centerpiece that shimmered wtih the pin lighting from above. Lighting is everything!

Unique Cocktail Hour

Angela and Jaime were married November 24th downtown at the Little Church of LaVillita. They offered their guest a unique experience by having the cocktail hour on an outside terrace above the Hilton Palacio Del Rio. After about an hour of music and libations the guests proceeded to the Stetson Room for dinner. This was a beautiful backdrop to the lighting of the Riverwalk and the Night Parade that same evening. They were the best seats in the house.

What a great time Winfield and I had at the marriage of Susie and Uriel's wedding. It was at the Dominion Country Club and was host to about 200 people from all over...but mostly from Laredo. I'm partial to Laredo since I grew up there for much of my school day's. Winfield says Laredo is it's own little country and is somewhat errie in that you can be in any part of the world and you will always run into someone from....Laredo. It's true :)

September 16th was a memorable day for many reasons. It is also the day Ben and Maria were married in "The Valley." If you haven't traveled there in a while it is no longer a cluster of little towns....they have merged into one big city. I have to thank Ben and Maria for inviting us to photograph there wedding. It was a great time and even better it was a trip to Taco Palenque on the way out on Sunday!

It was like old times.

Angie and Wally were married September 1st, 2007 at Los Encinos Texas Hill Country Estate. It was an intimate wedding of about 80 friends and family. One of their close friends "Richard" help planned the event. He also helped another friend plan their wedding which Winfield and I had the privilege of photographing...four years ago! Seeing "Richard" again was like....a blast from the past.

Belinda and Chance, Married August 26th, 2006. For them it was a new beginning in old history. Married in Hebbronville, Texas, Belinda's family lineage goes back to their direct relative Mr. Hebbron, who settled the terrain of what is now known as Hebbronville. With the entire town (it seemed like) at the celebration it was like one more story in the history books.

Married July 29th, 2006! It was the combination of flowers, dress, and location that conveyed the personalities of Nicole and Derek. The roses were a beautiful, rich, almost sultry red. Nicole's dress fit her like a glove, and the Ceremony and Reception had just enough decor to add personality. More and more we have noticed a trend in weddings that reflect the couple instead of the latest trend. The weddings pay special attention and consideration to their guest's, making sure that everyone feels welcomed.
Guitarist, David Aman provided the music for the ceremony at the Dominion, and Madame Makeup did a fabulous job with all the ladies!

A Perfect Day at the Beach

Well, almost perfect. A few rain clouds couldn't put a damper on Courtney and Justin's wedding day. The couple was so happy to married, a hurricane could have passed them by and they would not have noticed. Married on July 2nd, 2006 will make for a unforgettable 4th of July celebration for years to come. (One big party weekend!). With 350+ guest list it was not surprising to find out why. Courtney and Justin are the most genuine people I have met in a long time. Their family and friends can vouch for that.

Congratulations to Nicole and Pablo who were married July 1st, 2006. Alamo Heights, Sunset Ridge Church of Christ was the setting for the beautiful Ceremony. It's old world feel must have made Pablo's family feel as if they were still in Spain. Melissa White of Botanika was the florist for this occasion. Again, Melissa's arrangement of color and texture is what sets her apart from the others. The Ceremony was followed by a Reception at Club Giraud. If I were to recommend any one place based on caliber of Service, Five Star Menu and Quality of Leadership it would be Club Giraud. Keith does a wonderful job and is always a pleasure to work with.

Destination Weddings

Bonner and Thomas, both from the Dallas area, married in Fredericksburg, Texas this past June. The Minister, who was from Fredericksburg commented that throughout the weekend he kept running into persons who were visiting and in town for the Mead/Allen wedding. He also mentioned that everyone was sincerely enjoying the shops/activities/inns/and restaurants in the area.
Destination weddings are like having all your friends and family on vacation at the same time!

What happens when two resident anesthesiologist get married....They put everyone to sleep! On the contrary.

This was the liveliest crowd ever. Fantastic dancing, the Groom who jumped on stage to sing to his new bride, the Superman capes...don't ask. It all had the makings of an unforgettable night.

Heather and Chris married at Kali-Kate Thoroughbred Farms in Buda, Texas. The flowers were Orchids with blends of deep purple edges against the mostly white flower, very stunning!

And believe me, their first dance was a testimate to why everyone should take a few dance lessons before the big day.

Style: the influence of family lineage, international ties, and above all the Brides New York influence is what gave this wedding the grace and charisma that will be hard to follow. From the exquisite selection of florals to the menu designed with flavors that complimented the weather all made for an evening guests would remember forever (noteworthy was the gazpacho, light and refreshing, perfect for South Texas). Many of Jay's family traveled "accross the pond" to be a part of this very special event. Jay's grandfather who was unable to attend gave a heartfelt pre-recorded message that brought tears to everyone's eyes. The entire day consisted of various accents from New York, England, a bit from Australia (Christi's sister Kate) and of course Texas. Page Barteau catered the event flawlessly and Red Berry Mansion provided the scenic location. Chris of Future Sounds did a fabulous job with a mix of British and American tunes. Prettiest detail was the paper umbrellas handed out to the Bridesmaids at the Reception. And the Cake made by, of course.....Cathy Young!

La Cantera Resort - Spring Wedding

Congratulations to Kathleen and Ike Shapiro who were married at La Cantera April 1st.
It has been almost a year since Winfield and I have photographed a wedding at La Cantera Resort (excluding the pavilion.) and I had forgotten how beautiful it is. Just as a resort, it is probably one of the top resorts in Texas if not the south central region of the United States. Vicky, event director at the Resort was extremely helpful in organizing the entire event. Not only did she assist in every detail she gathered key people into place and directed guest to the appropriate place they needed to be. The courtyard served as the backdrop for the Cocktail Hour for the close to 500 guests.
Question: How do you keep 500 guest entertained? Ans: With the Reunion Band! They were great! This was their 4th Shapiro Wedding.

San Antonio Country Club Brunch

South By Southwest Film and Music

South By Southwest is coming to a close this week and showcased some of the latest film makers in the U.S. Winfield and his staff had a chance to see the latest technology and trends first hand. It's a great way to keep ahead of the crowd.

Wedding Planners - Do you really need one?

Yes!

However, do find the right one.

It's sad but true that wedding planners are probably the most under appreciated and under utilized aspect of the wedding process. There are so many variables and situations that will come up that need to be delegated to someone outside of family and relatives.
Reasons why:
You can't be in two places at the same time (ie. be setting up the reception and getting dressed)
You can't "cue" the music so you can proceed down the isle
You can't (shouldn't) be telling the caterer to charge (pour) the champagne so that your guests have their glasses ready for the toast

I could go on and on, trust me. Give them a chance. It's worth it.

San Antonio's wedding Hot Spot

Congratulations Allenson and Neal of Houston, TX who were married at Mission San Jose followed by a reception at the Southwest School of Arts and Crafts. The Craft Center seems to be San Antonio's hot spot for wedding receptions. It's beautiful interiors of limestone and breathtaking chandelier make it impressive for invited guests. Page Barteau catered the event and their staff added a fun flare. Always cheerful and helpful to the guests is a sign of good management. Craig of Atmosphere Entertainment kept the guest dancing, and dancing and dancing the night away. He really knows how to read the crowd. Not only is he a DJ he helps in every aspect of the wedding ensuring it runs smoothly. Great Job Craig!

Honeymoon Hideaway

Boutique Hotels are the hottest trends in travel.

Not as large as a franchise and they pay extra special attention to the detail. Its like combining a spa with a hotel. Many are devoted to a unique style. Whether it be Art nouveau, Vintage or Urban, they all have one thing in common. Service. Often, with enough advanced planning you can get a "great rate" or a package deal for around $125. Not bad considering the Holiday Inn can run about $75-$80. After the wedding consider treating yourself to some "me" time or rather "two of you" time. A good website to check out is kimptonhotels.com

I am not sure of any in San Antonio but I would guess The Havana or Watermark is the closest.

People in the elevator, smiling, saying hello. Down the corridor with big grins. Striking conversation about "the day" wishing everyone a Happy Valentines Day.

So to everyone, Happy Valentines Day to all and to my husband of 14 years. Of the 14 years, we have worked together for about 14 of them, (no, it's not a typo.) And I can probably guess that out of the time we have been together we have been apart about 90 days in total.

.....O my gosh! That's like being married 42yrs in "normal" couple years!

Birthday's come and go and I never know what to do....Until now. At a recent Bat Mitzvah, Philip Chancellor of 5150 Productions had a fantastic set that kept everyone enthralled. Imagines this, Four podeioums equipped with microphone, buzzer and digital readouts of points accumulated. Questions are given to the participants (trivial pursuit style) and the first one who buzzes in and answers correctly and gets to 500 points wins the game. Literally, people were pushing and shoving to get the chance to play, and I'm not talking about the 13 year olds'.

It's a small world after all.

About a year ago we photographed a lovely couple (Bonnie and Gal) at Club Giraud. Beautiful, elegant and tons of fun. One of the Guests who attended (David Marne, Mayor of Shavano Park) called and asked if he could order a few reprints from the wedding. Sure! I replied, just come to the office and I'll be happy to place the order. Three seconds later Amanda, the receptionist tells me there is a David Marne to see me. It turns out that David offices in the same building we are in. Small World.

David's Daughter, Naomi, just turned 13 and had a great celebration! Saturday we photographed all the friends and family and lowe and behold, who's doing the music and entertainment.....Philip Chancellor of 5150. If you have never heard of 5150 he is probably the best DJ/Emcee/entertainment person in the industry. If he can't get your crowd moving no one can. Philip brings professionalism to this industry in a way no other can.

He's great at weddings!

What a great opportunity to meet our vendors in person. Albums Incorporated, Leather Craftsmen, Cypress Albums, and many more were there showcasing new album designs and materials. Of course all the hardware people were there as well namely Canon, Quantum, Photoflex etc. We made some great discoveries and are anxious to get samples made for the office.
